Dry eye treatment

Dixie Eye Care offers dry eye treatment using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

IPL is a safe and effective treatment for age spots, sun spots, fine lines, skin tightening, and the removal of telangiectasia (small blood vessels under the skin) and rosacea. IPL is of additional interest to our office because it is a very effective treatment for dry eye. The energy from the bright flash of light from the IPL handpiece penetrates the skin and targets areas of pigmentation and inflammation. It also absorbs into the oil glands inside of the eyelids and helps to melt those oils so they flow better.

The tear film has three layers - mucus, aqueous, and oil. Most patients experience dry eye because the oil layer is lacking, causing the tears to evaporate very quickly between blinks. IPL helps to clear blockages in the oil glands and therefore improve tear quality and dry eye symptoms.

IPL requires 4 treatments spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart, followed by a single maintenance treatment after 6 or 12 months.

What to Expect

On the day of your treatment, do not wear any make-up. You will have a lidocaine cream placed on the area to be treated for comfort. Then an ultrasound gel will be applied and eye coverings to protect your eyes from the bright light. Anyone accompanying you will be given protective eyewear.

The treatment consists of multiple flashes of light from the IPL handpiece. Each flash of light will feel like a rubber band snap. The settings can be adjusted to maximize your comfort and clinical outcomes.

At our office, we use the iLight Pro IPL and radio frequency unit, which combines radio frequency for additional collagen production for help with fine lines and skin tightening.
